Taranaki is the renowned as the surf
center of New Zealand due to a number of reasons.
Firstly, Taranaki’s geography
is best described as a rounded peninsula that has approximately
180 degrees of coastline to choose from between the two points,
Opunake and Onaero. The 180 degrees of coastline means that a number
of different winds can provide the important offshore required for
perfect surf.
The span of Taranaki coastline covers
places from Opunake, Arawhata, Rahotu, Pungarehu, Warea, Paora,
Puniho, Okato, Oakura, Back Beach, East End, Fitzroy, Waiwakaiho,
Waitara, Motonui, Onaero, Urenui, and you may as well throw in Waitoetoe,
Wai-iti, Mokau and Awakino. What an awesome line up of impressive
beaches, and coastal point breaks that are exposed to clean ground
swells and offshore winds. Equally though the Taranaki coast is
also exposed to some ferocious winds and ocean swells than can become
in stormy conditions around 5 to 6 meters, which would obviously
demand full respect.
